Valence for Dummies

Valence is a word used in chemistry to describe the combining capacity of an atom or a group of atoms with other atoms. Now, imagine you're at a party, and you want to dance with someone. It's just like how an atom wants to connect and bond with another atom to form a molecule. But here's the thing, not everybody can dance with anyone. Some people already have dance partners, and some people are free to dance solo. That's exactly how valence works in chemistry.

Each atom has a specific number of "dance partners" it can bond with, and we call that number the valence. It's like each atom has a dance card with a limited number of slots for dance partners.
