Breechloader for Dummies

Breechloader is a term used to describe a specific type of firearm that has a really interesting way of loading and firing. Okay, imagine you have a toy gun that you love to play with. This toy gun has a special way of loading ammunition. Instead of having to pull back the top part of the gun to put in a new bullet like in a normal toy gun, this toy gun has a special opening in the back, right near the handle. This opening is called the breech. So with a breechloader, you would put the new bullet directly into this breech opening, instead of having to open the top of the gun. Then, once the bullet is inserted, you would close the breech by moving a lever, a little bit like how you would close a door by pushing it shut.

Well, picture this: a pirate has a really cool old-fashioned musket. This musket is a breechloader. Then, with a swift movement, the pirate would close the breech, and the musket would be ready to fire. Bang!
