White-stemmed Filaree for Dummies

Now, I'm going to let you in on a little secret. White-stemmed Filaree has another name that scientists use, and it's "Erodium moschatum." But don't worry, we'll stick to the common name for now because it's much easier to remember. In fact, the "Filaree" part of the name might sound a bit funny, but it actually comes from an Italian word that means "hairy." And why is that? Well, the leaves of the White-stemmed Filaree plant have some tiny hairs on them, giving them a slightly fuzzy appearance. Isn't that fascinating?

If we want to get even more specific, White-stemmed Filaree belongs to a group of plants called geraniums. Now, before you start picturing those beautiful flowers that your mom might grow in the garden, I have to tell you that White-stemmed Filaree doesn't have showy flowers like that. Instead, it has these small, delicate flowers that are usually purplish or pinkish in color, which you may have seen growing on the side of the road or in an open field. When the flowers have finished blooming and the petals have fallen off, the seeds form in a long, slender shape that looks like a "filament." It's almost like a skinny wand or a spaghetti noodle, but much, much smaller. These seed structures can get tangled up in your shoelaces or your pet's fur and hitch a ride to a different place.
