Unlikely is a word we use to describe something that is not very probable or not very likely to happen. It's like when you have a test tomorrow and you haven't studied at all, it's unlikely that you'll do well on the test because you didn't prepare. Another way of looking at it is if you and your friends decide to have a race, and one of your friends is the fastest runner in the group, it's unlikely that you will win because your friend is faster than you.

Think of it this way: imagine you have a jar with different colored marbles inside, and you're trying to pick a specific color without looking. If there are only a few marbles of that color and a lot of marbles of other colors, it's unlikely that you will pick the specific color you want. The chances are not in your favor.

So, when something is unlikely, it means that the chances of it happening are not very high. It's not impossible, but it's not very probable or likely to happen. We use this word to express that something is more on the side of not happening rather than happening.
