Renal Insufficiency for Dummies
noun
What does Renal Insufficiency really mean?
Renal insufficiency is a term that we use to describe a condition where the kidneys in our body are not working as well as they should be. Now, I know that the word "renal" may sound a bit unfamiliar, but it actually just refers to our kidneys. So, renal insufficiency simply means that our kidneys are not able to do their job properly. Our kidneys are super important because they help remove the waste and extra water from our blood to make urine, also they help regulate the levels of important substances in our body, like salt, potassium, and even acidity. When our kidneys are not able to do all these things properly, that's when we have renal insufficiency.
Think of our kidneys as tiny filters or cleaning machines in our body. Just like a filter in a fish tank or a coffee machine, they help get rid of all the impurities and keep our body clean and balanced. But sometimes, due to various reasons, these filters or cleaning machines might start to slow down or not work as efficiently as they should. When this happens to our kidneys, it can lead to renal insufficiency.
Renal insufficiency can happen for different reasons. For example, it can be caused by certain diseases like diabetes or high blood pressure, which can damage the tiny blood vessels in the kidneys and affect their function. It can also be caused by certain medications or even by an infection in the kidneys. In some cases, people may be born with kidneys that are not fully developed or functioning properly, which can also lead to renal insufficiency.
Now, it's important to note that renal insufficiency is not the same as kidney failure. While renal insufficiency means that the kidneys are not working as well as they should, kidney failure means that the kidneys have completely stopped working. So, kidney failure is like when the filters or cleaning machines in our body have completely broken down. We definitely want to do everything we can to prevent kidney failure and treat renal insufficiency to keep our kidneys as healthy as possible.
