Persecution for Dummies
noun
pronunciation: ,pɜrsə'kjuʃənWhat does Persecution really mean?
Persecution is a word that describes a very unpleasant experience that people go through when they are being treated unfairly or cruelly, only because they are different in some way. It's like being constantly picked on and bullied, but on a much larger scale. Imagine if you were playing a game with your friends, but they started to exclude you from the game and they made fun of you for no reason at all. It would definitely feel really bad and unfair, right? Well, that's kind of what persecution feels like, but on a much bigger scale and sometimes it can even be life-threatening.
When we talk about persecution, we usually think about situations where people are being mistreated because of their race, religion, nationality, gender, or even their beliefs. For example, in history, there have been many instances of persecution, like during the time of slavery when African people were treated horribly, or during the Holocaust when millions of Jewish people were unfairly targeted and killed. These are extremely extreme examples, but they help us understand the concept of persecution better.
To go a little further, let me give you another example that might be easier to understand. Let's say there's a school with different groups of students. One of these groups is made up of students who really love sports, while the other group is made up of students who don't like sports at all and prefer to spend their time painting and drawing. Now, let's imagine that the sports-loving group starts to make fun of the art-loving group, calling them names and excluding them from activities, just because they have different interests. This would be a form of persecution, as the art-loving group is being mistreated simply because they are different.
So, to summarize, persecution means treating someone unfairly, often through bullying, mistreatment, or even violence, solely because they are different. It's like excluding someone from a game just because they have different ideas, beliefs, or characteristics that others don't like or understand. It's a very hurtful and unjust experience that no one should have to go through.
