Lung is a word that we use to describe an important part of our body, which helps us to breathe. You know how we need air to survive, right? Well, our lungs are in charge of taking the air in and out of our body, so we can get oxygen to our blood and remove carbon dioxide. Our lungs are like two soft, spongy balloons that sit inside our chest, protected by our ribs. They are connected to our mouth and nose through a tube called the windpipe or trachea. When we breathe, the air goes through our nose or mouth, down the windpipe, and into the lungs. Inside our lungs, there are millions of tiny air sacs called alveoli. These alveoli are like small bags that help us get the oxygen from the air into our bloodstream, so our body can use it. Our lungs also help us to get rid of waste gases, like carbon dioxide, when we breathe out.

So, imagine your lungs are like two balloons made of soft material. When we breathe in, the balloons fill up with air, and when we breathe out, the air goes out of the balloons. Just like balloons need air to blow them up, our lungs need air to fill them up so they can help us breathe. Our lungs are an essential part of our body because they allow us to get the oxygen we need to survive.
